Tomczyk Makes BMW M6 His Daily Driver
The 2011 DTM champion from Rosenheim, Martin Tomczyk, has left nothing to chance and with the precision of a professional racing driver has adapted the high-performance sports car developed by the BMW M GmbH to suit his own personal style and to deliver outstanding performance.
Martin Tomczyk found the ideal possibilities to do this in the range of BMW M Performance accessories for the models BMW M5, BMW M6 Coupe, BMW M6 Convertible and BMW M6 Gran Coupe now available in combinations designed exclusively for each specific model.
In a workshop located on the premises of the BMW Munich plant, Tomczyk actively helped to transform the exclusive high-performance automobile into an individually configured, one-of-a-kind car.
The components he chose, among a couple others, also include the BMW M Performance exhaust silencer system. This sports exhaust system, which was developed by the BMW M GmbH in collaboration with the company Akrapovič and is made completely from titanium, is offered both for the BMW M5 and for all variants of the BMW M6, enhancing even further the characteristic sound of the 412 kW/560 hp high-revving V8 power unit.
Footnote – What Is Sports’ Exhaust System?
From the name – exhaust – it’s simple to picture a piping that is of necessity an internal combustion engine component to exhaust, the word again, or vent hot burnt gases from the engine so that the engine can breathe fresh and continue to excite the driver.
I use the word “excite” deliberately. Those of you familiar with Footnote Today and Jigged in all know that we’re about Performance and excitement – Joy in Driving. An exhaust design plays plenty role to make that happen. As you may already know, Joy-in-Driving is not accidental. It is built into the car. It is its Personality – its Soul.
Turbocharger, for more gobs of engine power; catalytic converter to convert noxious gases to more environmentally safer ones; and muffler to modify the engine noise to a more sonorous and particular note are first of all the most necessary components of an exhaust system. However, when does the exhaust system earn that Performance designation?
It begins from the exhaust manifold – a number of pipes matching the number of cylinders of the particular engine and designed to be of equal length, all flowing from the cylinder ports into one pipe that vacates the hot gas out through the car’s underbelly to the open.
Now, with stock production cars, wanting to save material, to occupy the least space necessary, or to save production cost may result in a design that does not effectively and efficiently vent the gases from the engine. In fact, heat loss alone from the exhaust’s poor thermal holding capacity, can drive the heat at the intake manifold so high that the gases are back-pressured into the cylinders, heavily degrading performance.
A Performance exhaust corrects that with header – a more material-intensive manifold with bends and folds calculated to make the paths from each cylinder’s exhaust port to the common outlet all equal length, and joined at narrow angles to encourage pressure waves to flow through the outlet, and not back towards other cylinders.

With the racetrack and the street in mind, this new exhaust system is crafted from an extremely heat-resistant and lightweight chrome-nickel alloy called Inconel®. This flow optimized exhaust system reduces exhaust backpressure and allows the M3’s 414 horsepower V8 engine to produce an even more powerful sound. This resulted in a weight reduction of approximately 40% (~20 lbs.) when compared to the stock exhaust.
